Overwhelmer at the Elmer (Thriller in Manila didn't come close!)

Elmer Cuemasters 5 - Goodfellas 2

Last night saw the titanic matching of the top two teams in Division Four, the Elmer Cuemasters and the Goodfellas. The nearest challengers to these sides in the division are some sixteen points behind. This match was all about the fight for the number one spot in the table, and had been anticipated for weeks.

The Cuesmasters following a timely 6-1 victory in their match of last week were now within three points of the Goodfellas who sat resolutley at the number one spot in the table. The Cuemasters knew they had to have a good result tonight to stand any realistic chance of winning the division.

So it was that both teams assembled and the electric atmosphere of the stand-off commenced. The first game was an important one which both sides of course knew. The Cuemasters with Gary Bacon at the table got off to a flying start. With just two balls left to his opponents six Gary elected to not pot the easy yellow over the bottom corner pocket as it was almost impossible to get position on his last ball. His opponents next shot was an attempted safety which had the downside of releasing the only difficult ball the Cuemasters had on the table. Gary then proceeded to pot his two remaining yellows and sink a not too easy black to secure the all important first game and get the Elmer Cuemasters off to a tidy 1-0 lead.

The Goodfellas fought back well in the next game and Casey up for the Cuemasters found himself with six balls to his opponents one on his second visit to the table. Casey however rose to the challenge and with a combination of great tactical play and solid potting saw off the early threat to hammer the home sides advantage.
2-0, Elmer Cuemasters.

The second game had been very much a tactical affair and this percolated into many of the games that followed. "I haven't used my brain so much in a game of pool before" - the vociferous exclamation of Ricky Cook as he secured the third game for the Elmers and hammered home the lead. 3-0 Elmer Cuemasters.

Our captain Ted, at 2-0 and 3-0 up warned that we still had to play well to win the match. "I'm happy but I'll be happier when we've won", were his words as he smiled beamingly on at the victory that was almost within our grasp and rallied our side for a final push.

You might expect at this stage of the game that the Goodfellas start to weary a little. After all they were three games down to their rivals vying for the hallowed number one spot in the division with only four games to play. If the Elmers were to win this match by any advantage they would jostle the Goodfellas from the top of the table, both sides knew this. However the Goodfellas are not at the top of the table for nothing, not only did they refuse to succumb to the pressure but it seemed to bolster their determination.

Marco in the fourth game for the Elmers and David in the fifth, both strong players in their own right found themselves pitted against a defiant and determined Goodfellas. The Goodfellas fought back valiantly and soon the score line read 3-2. The Elmers had stated their case at the start of the match, and the Goodfellas had just replied.
3-2 Elmer Cuemasters.

The penultimate game was an important one and both sides realized this, the difference between a 3-3 score line and 4-2 with one game to play would be immense.

So it was that I found myself at the table trying to craft a win for our team out of the sixth game despite our enviable 3-0 early advantage. I broke well but ran out of position on the fourth ball. Following an exchange of shots by both sides, I eventually found myself back on the table with a reassuringly easy black along the top of the table for the game. In it went and at last the Elmers had the win.

A deserved win and credit to every member of our team on the night. We picked up the gauntlet thrown down and played some great pool tonight.

Damage limitation now for the Goodfellas and despite a very close final game Andy for the Elmers stole the last point of the night.
5-2 Elmer Cuemasters.

The Goodfellas showed their solid match play, but on the day the Elmer Cuemasters shone. We were up for this game more than probably any other we've played this season as we knew how important it was to our overall standing in the table.

The Goodfellas lived up to their name taking the loss well. Standing proudly at the top of the table we know that we need to work as hard as ever to maintain the standing. "Make the most of it as we'll be fighting for points in every one of the remaining matches!" Was the warning from an indefatigable Goodfellas at the close of the match.

A great a night, two great teams. Everything to play for now as the Elmer Cuemasters fight for their standing as the true warriors of division four, and their right to the accolade of Cuemaster. evil laugh
