For those who weren't lucky enough to witness Rocket's exploits last night, here's what happened . .
Picture the scene . . The Rack Pack are 4-2 down and have just lost the precious bonus points against their main relegation rivals, the Bloodhounds.
Peter 'The Rocket' Esseku is picked again @ #7 . . Dishes but misses the black . . A few shots later and attempting to get out of a snooker, Rocket lines up the angle and accidentally swipes one of his opponents balls with his cue to which we all roll with laughter . . Rocket surprisingly finds this amusing . .
His opponent then somehow manages to go inoff with Rocket's black pretty much over the pocket and gifts him the win . . Rocket gives us a little wink and says to me "I'm going to look at you when I pot this" . . We egg him on to do it saying that he hasn't got the nuts to do something so stupid . . Low and behold Rocket cues up the black, turns to the crown, cues the black and rattles it!
At this point we're in absolute tears of laughter while Harry is screaming, frothing at the mouth and pacing Rileys in a fit of rage. Incidentally, Rocket is still laughing at this point as well as the Bloodhounds, including Rocket's opponent who is on the receiving end of this . .
Luckily for Rocket, the black stays in the jaws, Harry screams a bit more and Rocket rolls in the black to rescue what might be a priceless point come the end of the season.
I feel for Harry as it can't have been a healthy 10 seconds for him but it was one of the single most funny moments I've ever witnessed in the league and shows that regardless of the situation, standard and environment, pool can be a funny ol' game
Rocket . . We salute you! |

Quality.
The Coney may still be around next season for all I know Alex but if it does it will bare little resemblance to the team that has played through the years. The fight has gone to be honest.

It's been an entertaining and worthwhile journey. I have really enjoyed playing against some great players and can take some personal satisfaction from it. I won't be playing next year and i really hope that The Coney can continue. I will say this now, but i am not quitting forever as i'm sure one day Alex will need to dip into the transfer market. And as long as i have a PC i can always send him the messages he craves. |

In all seriousness, I really hope you pull together and keep it going, maybe a merger is what is required and I think once upon a time the Cuemasters were making similar noises, certainly would have a great team if that ever happened. I know the 6 previous battles have taken its toll on our previous good relationship but thats sport, we are both to blame as we are too competitive for our own good. If the end for the original Coney comes in three weeks time then it will be a sad day for the Croydon Pool League and I'll say it...a sad day for the Eden.
Good thing is Pondlife seems to have taken quite a fancy to the Eden these days so we'll not be short of finding the next grudge fixture....

I am so glad you found it so amusing. I can chuckle at it now, but at the time it was a stupid thing to do

well who knows alex the coney cuemasters certainly has a good ring about it.! and i belive luke davis will be playing for us during the summer, and speaking to rob spry last night he seems interested in carrying on pool at some time! definately think there will be changes next winter season as again we have struggled with numbers due to players family and work commitments but considering were only 3 points off 4th spot we are delighted, i think the whole division will be sad to see the coney fold as i said previously they are a credit to the league and when at full strength have a very good team. its very rare in the league now that you get a team full of players who have been mates for many years and still carry on a tuesday night tradition, always found them a friendly bunch who always play with a high level of sportsmanship and competitiveness. the eden v coney matches have been classics of which will probably never be witnessed again maybe not classics in respect of the quality but certainly the banter and rivalary is unmatched and its nice to hear alex appreciating this despite all the war of words from past battles. |

Alex, how lovely that my humble team could be earmarked for your future vitriolic comments. We look forward to renewing our rivalry in the not too distant future. The prospect of becoming your Coney replacements has a great deal of appeal !! Perhaps we might even emulate their past performances by handing out Eden thrashings on a regular basis !! |

How did Millers black go in yesterday?? I still can see how it dropped. There was about 10 players from other teams watching him hit the black and it was missing by miles as soon as he hit it. There must have been 2 acts of God at Rileys last night, one of them was the lights falling down on Danny's game and the other was God's invisible hand pushing Millers black in.
We should have won both frames 5 and 6 so it should not have even mattered. Very dissapointing considering how well we have been playing.
I cant believe the Coney will fold, its like someone who keeps saying they are going to do themselves in, but never actually do it. I think they need to either fold (which is never going to happen) or keep quiet. I know for a fact that they have had extra players at some games and have chosen to play players who are not turning up regularly but more friends with the management. This is why they struggle as when those "friends" dont turn up the other players are f**cked off so dont bother either. |

In terms of what is left of the Coney, I know Luke will fit in well at the Cuemasters this summer. He really is a quality player and will fit in well to the dynamic of that team. I for one would love to look in a year or two and see the cuemasters mounting a serious title challenge. They are definitely capable. If Mr Spry is on the market then he will also become a valuable asset to any team in the league, no question (imo).
Cheers for the post Alex, I can only really speak from a personal perspective and say (unless I change jobs) I will definitely not be playing. I think Berty is the same and Merv's commute is not really sustainable. Rhys (legend) may well be moving away and Mat Ansel has already. Whatever the outcome, it has been emotional

I always mean what I say James so I sincerely hope you keep afloat. This league needs teams like the Coney, crap as you are, but pure value for money and one day just one day you may shut me up and win something. Certainly have the players to do it maybe not the belief against the big boys but you have the experience now. Eg. Ansell - poo at the best of times. This season against us he showed how much he had improved and was awesome on both occasions. Spry - terribly overrated of course! Got dished by Dave at your gaff and then showed massive character to return the compliment at our place. You loosing to my Dad in the first game was priceless but then again you have a trump card up your sleeve in the form of Saxton. The rivalry with Berty, the money match which I won but regret in a way for doing so as the only winner was Matt. You signing our Eden girl but alas she never made the last match, and we'll have to save the whistles to another time, or not.....
One last thing, your old man Merv will remain a Croydon legend, a true gentlemen regardless of whether he is holding a pool cue. Massive respect to him from travelling from Dorset each week.He told me the other week at our match that he was driving 4 hours to make a match on a Tuesday but recently he has commuted by train into London and back down to Beckenham. That is commitment for the Coney. And he has been doing that for regularly for years. Makes my weekly sabatical from Essex seem like nothing. For that alone you owe him, plus of course Luke for setting the team up and dumping his bird in South Africa to return home to play pool again, Berty for donating two hundred and fifty squiddlies in June 2007 to such a worthwhile cause, yourself naturally for calling Scott a cunt (that was quality!), Ansell (bleeds Eden) for playing like a twat for 4 matches and then playing like Reyes for the last two. Spry for being poo and leaving every match within 5 seconds of the black dropping. Dippy for nodding and acknowledging every round of applause he gets for potting a ball. Rhys for being a part time serial killer and working undercover for Osama Bin Laden in his lunchhour, plus being so horrible by talking to us when we have played you, plus for pushing Adam out the Elmer door. Saxton? Well you keep that memory. unplanned but as always totally off the cuff. Aha......lets us not forget the boy who turned up with his cue in a brown cardboard tube and we thought how sad, but he beat your newest recruit aka Coney Poney Donna! Richard Lambert, I believe, was his name. A memorable moment, wasn't then, but sadly it is now.....
Kicking it all in is the easy out.
But thanks for the memories...(i'll let you do the violin bit)

I see all the eden are back on form after their humiliation the other week we were all worried about you for a while.
we will see if we fold or not but my feeling is when we say we will fold we will fold unlike of course the eden soul sellers who will kill their granny to steal players from unsuspecting lower division teams to continue. This of course usually happens after a defeat such is the fragile nature of the eden clan.
enjoy guys I would rather eat from the bottom of glastonbury toilet than be associated with the eden but that is just my humbled poney opinion.
we won nothing but I say this will absolute sincerity .............bothered!

What humiliating defeat was that - your 7 zip against the Ego's or 5-2 against the cuemasters 5
As i have said well played for beating us mate - but you really should try to play out till the end of the season or just leave now & then no more
your siging of Donna & Saxton, Sure they played for a lower Div team ? - Surely only the Eden do that don't they - So we do it & it is out of order & you do it - Guess it is only helping the needy anyway so it don't really count eh fella
If you weren't bothered you wouldn't have posted son...
And as for us folding we would have except for signing
Steve Field - He was not at another team
Rab Harkness & Barry Watkins - Wanted to play Div 1 & we provide them a platform
And finally Liam Connors will return
So unlike the last 2 season's when we had 5's & 6's including Pedro - We now have a team that we consider worth keeping with, i guess you now realise what that feels like as you are now bowing out because the logistics just don't add up
In closing mate - Don't be bitter that you didn't make the last magical time you chaps beat us - If you did the result would have probably been 4-3 to us
Cheers for the memories & good luck with those toilets at glastonbury

Steve, i can't quite see how you can liken The Coney folding to someone threatening to commit suicide. We have never said before that we are going to fold, but many of us now have other commitments to make that has forced some of us into making a decision that unfotunately has a huge bearing on whether The Coney can continue.
At least Alex has had the decency to thank us for the rivalry and competition that we have provided for the last 3 seasons. |

Bloody hell, I don't know where to start. Thanks for the comments Alex. The Eden v Coney rivalry has been a massive part of our enjoyment in this league.
As it stands at the moment, I am pretty sure there will be no Coney next season. The harsh reality is that too many of us are finding it a struggle mainly due to travel or work commitments. I contemplated trying to find some talented young players who had Div 1 potential but can't really see the point. The Coney for me will always be remembered for the core of us that started off in Div 6 and worked our way up through the divisions. Yeah, we picked up some people on the way and in alex's defence I have done some lower division poaching of my own through the years and even ditched two of my school mates who I knew would not cut it as we got closer to Div 1.
The fact is that Merv can't keep coming from Dorset for all of the league games, Rhys won't be able to play once he moves to Milton Keynes, James shouldn't really make any games at all but does out of commitment to the Coney cause, Ansell is moving away. That only really leaves myself, Saxton and Dips as regulars so need to sign too many players to justify carrying on. I'll never say never but I'm looking forward to playing for the Cuemasters in the Summer and if that goes well I would be hoping to stay with them for the Winter.
It's been one hell of a journey and we are all much better players as a result but times change and it feels like the right time to call it a day. |

Nutty one - you have me at a loss as i dont know who you are but my comment was more like cry wolf than the way you have taken it. Half of the boards on this site are filled with "the coney are going to fold.." and i just think its all a bit silly now. If you do actually fold then of course it will be a bad loss for the league but i have heard it 100 times.
Berty - I find your comments about the Eden quite strange given that we gave you your first chance in Div 1 when you played a season for us and gained the name "The Desintegrator" due to your pooper falling out each week. Luke also played for us and he won quite a few games. Donna was a very useful player for us so that makes nearly half the Coney team.
You only need 5 players in the summer so you only really need to sign 1 or 2, maybe Alex could give you some tips on player poaching, i hear he is writing a book on it lol
I mean come to think of it there are only a couple of your team we dont actually like ;-)
After beating the Ego's twice on the bounc and the Hotshots for 2 seasons running maybe we should replace the coney rivalry with a good team ;-) |
