I'm probably missing something but why is there a bye in round 2?

Can anyone explain this? We played a preliminary round in this only to see there's a bye in the next round.

No doubt after Round 2 there will have to be another whole host of ''byes'' because the numbers don't stack up....

I don't think Drillers even entered in the first place.

Is there a plate for this comp as well? If so that would explain the numbers.
Posted by Pondlife on 15-11-2007 18:13

Yes,there is a plate competition in the knockout cup. The Drillers didn't enter any of the competitions. They didn't have time. The original intention was to play out of Frames in Coulsdon. When they found that this wasn't going to happen, they lost half their team before they'd hit a ball. Hannah tried to do them a favour by allowing them to play at Purley Way but they only had five dependable players. Hence their premature demise. I certainly can't remember anything like this happening in the top division. It's very sad !!

Harry - :nerner:
Pondlife - I wouldn't have thought you'd have got relegated last season but you did. I wouldn't have thought you'd then find yourself mid-table in Division Two but you are. It just shows that things don't always go to plan, especially in the KO Cup!
ThePower (grrr) - Under normal circumstances I would have been dropped again tonight following out 7-0 win last week but we have no Shaggy or Jake tonight as they're at snooker so I'm back in . .

apparently it was a feiry evening at the elmer. 3-1 down the coney had not missed a shot. spry makes it 3-2. saxton steps up all kinds of controvercy over a jump shot / not jump shot their guy leaves him an impossible black down the rail. saxton gets it. they pick him again he wins. coney in the next round and all kinds of arguments still going on. Glad I missed it but big up the sexy saxton

All ended fairly amicably. Apart from 2 usual suspects they were a really top group of blokes and once again probably wonder how they left without a win. We knew they had a good top order and we really didn't play at all badly to be 3-1 down. My bloke dished from the break so was hoping they might pick me again but that was left to the Saxtonator. At 3-2 down he played a 1 in 20 pot to make it 3-3. He then turns to me and says 'I'll be really pissed off if they pick me again after that' and 2 seconds later he's picked again. A very tense frame followed but he pulled out one hell of a positional shot to give himself a straight black along the rail. He doesn't miss those so 4-3 to the Coney. I would like to apologise to the Addicts though for instinctively calling a foul when i wasn't reffing. I, like the rest of my team, believed that if the white jumped over a ball it was a foul. Their player was on the black, miscued and the white hit the top of the black and jumped over it. In the old rules that used to be a foul but seemingly not in World Rules. Thanks to the refs and to their team for letting the refs get on with their job and make the right call. Aside from the controversy, well played Ansell and to Saxton, who was a real hero tonight! Bye next round please...

To be fair Spudangles, it's not the Leagues fault that this change in the comp has come about.
The Croydon & District Pool League has always been run by the people, for the people. The poor mugs on the Committee simply carry out what the majority of eligible votes call for.
The League was simply trying to do what was asked of it. Bottom line is; it hasn't worked.
Damned if you do & damned if you don't.

I don't think I ever got an answer to my question about why we played a prelim when there was a bye in the next round. For that reason alone the system is flawed.

It dinnah take a brain surgeon![/quote it has run just like that for years .... but with the new comp coming in and the conditions attached to it, it sort of messed up the figures a bit ... I will be advocating at the half general meeting that all entries are entered into the comps in the first round (including 1st div players) in future to do away with the farce that is running at the mo. The fundamentals behind the plate comps I am in total agreement with but the practicalities of running it with the present conditions just does not work. So you being a brain surgeon n all that ... work this into a tidy little comp ... 62 1st Div players - 147 others

The 62 Div 1 players get a bye into last 128. That leaves 66 spaces to fill. Multiply that by 2 = 132, that gives the number of players needed in the 1st round (last 256). Take 132 from 147 = 15, which is the number of matches needed in the prelim.
I'm off to perform a frontal lobotomy.

Tell me about it Sass. As I wasn't reffing and it was getting a bit heated, I took a back seat and didn't actually read the rule myself. Grettal and their ref read the rule and interpreted it as not being a jump shot if it strikes the object ball and then jumps. Their player did strike the object ball before it cleared it so guess it is ok? I'll read the rules myself later to make sure.

A jump shot is only a foul if the white jumps over a ball it would have hit if it has stayed on the bed of the table in an identical shot. If it hits that ball however, it is NOT a foul.
Hope that helps.:handshake:

He miscued and jumped the white over the black which he was going for. The black was the object ball and would have been hit had he not jumped. The cue ball made a thick contact on the black as it jumped it. I read the rules as legitimising that shot. Spank me if I'm wrong.

Where's your contigency for the plate comp ... the 15 losers from the prelim or are they added to the losers of the 1st round .... thanks for your input but at the end of the day don;t matter which way anyone paints this up theres only one way to go and thats everyone goes into the hat with byes attached accordingly and then the main comp and plate plays off adjacent to one another being 256v256 - 128v128, etc etc and this to apply for all comps.

We really should have battered them, but we didn't. I would like to wish them a continuation of all the luck in the world against the Hotshots, but I still don't think that it will be enough. Perhaps,if they were to move the table again as they did against us. Might I suggest that it would be more useful if it were a little nearer a fireplace,or better still,in it !! That is about all it's worth !!

There you have it.
We had all the luck in the world and I moved the table (which should be burned) into the same place as I have for the Cue Masters last two home matches including the Hot Shots game this week.
Obviously I'll try to find somewhere else to hide it before they come back for the third round cup match.
