Dear Team Secretary,
I write to inform you of the forthcoming 2007/08 Presentation Dance Night which will be held on Saturday 26th July, 2008 (from 7.30pm) at :-
RILEYS PURLEY WAY, 31 IMPERIAL WAY, CROYDON, CRO 4RR
We would like to bring to your attention that the evening is for the benefit of all League Members whether or not they have trophies to collect as the presentations form only a small part of the evening's entertainment. It has always been intended for the evening to be an "END OF SEASON PARTY NIGHT" but unfortunately it seems that it has interpreted in the past for Trophy Winners and Runners-Up only and this is definately not the case.
EVERYBODY AND THEIR GUESTS ARE WELCOME.
ANY TROPHIES THAT GO UNCOLLECTED WILL BE DONATED TO WORTHY CAUSES!
Yours in sport,
MARK HALSEY
League Secretary

Is it true that the Singles Final will be played at the presentation. If so it would make for an even better night and why has it not been advertised as such.

It was mentioned in the schedule for the matches
Could perhaps make it a bit more apparent in the league paper work during the summer?

Thought I'd bump this puppy back to the top seeing as though it is this Saturday.
Trophy Presentation for the Winter League @ Suzy's.
I'm sure a lot of people will have forgotton, so make sure you dig them out over the next couple of days and get them up there.
This weeks presentation will also see a ground breaking first for our league, the Single Final will be played as a curtain raiser.
Danny Evans (The Eagles) vs. Mark Miller (Propeller)
Best of 7 I think, but don't quote me.
This has been done in other leagues around the County for years, and the general feedback is that having Presentation night on "Finals" night is very successful, so let's see how it goes.
It should at the very least ensure a healthy turnout for the first time in a while.

Everyone else said having a trophy with their name on and having it presented made it a bit more special.
Wow - I actually get a trophy this year!

Mark Hartley-Miller played the better pool on Saturday night and was unfortunate to have not been 2 or even maybe 3-0 up, but quite obviously in my case I was so happy for Danny to win in his last chance to claim the Croydon singles title and to share the No1 ranked player title.
I know for a fact he was very nervous because it meant so much for him.
Well done fella, although I can't rib you anymore about there having only been one 'D Evans' with their name on a Croydon singles winning trophy!
I'm so glad the final was received well amongst both of the players involved and spectators alike. I'd been trying to convince the C&DPL committee back when I was one of them that the way forward is for the final to be played on Presentation Night so the players could gain the recognition they deserved for actually getting that far. The only thing now is to get the Presentation Night moved to within 3 weeks of the season ending. There seems to be no reason why this can't be done, as the trophies can be ordered WAY in advance of the season finishing, then the plaques can be appropriately engraved after the last game of the season; surely it wouldn't take an engraver more than 3 weeks to engrave a few hundred of them . . .
Maybe someone could propose and second this if they think it a good idea.

Couldn't agree more...
I think the presentation night would get a much highter attendance if it was held as an end of season party, I know it is supposed to be but we're half way through a season at the moment.
Still a top night though.:clap::clap:

Agree too. It would be so much better to be recognising peoples' achievement at the time rather than months afterwards.
One other thing to mention was that the award made to Hot Shots on behalf of the league was spot on. I don't know who chose the award but the guys thought it was great so well done.

It was a shame some of the other lads from the Hotshots had other committmeents because I am certain that the ovation they recieved for their achiement was genuine and would have pleased the whole team.
Nonetheless the three boys who were their have been in it for the long run, and were well deserving of the award they received.

It was a good night except the Patriots were unable to collect the ko cup on the night which was won months ago and could surely of been returned in that time from previous winners.
We were all looking forward to receiving the cup on the night
Could i get a date when we will get the cup so i can tell everyone
thanks

It's a strange situation actually.
I'd like to see the Cups (League Cup + KO Cups) returned in time for the actual night of the corresponding Final, so that when the victor on the night wins, whoever is officiating that night can present them with the trophy, as in done in all major sports.
I'm sure it will then be easy enough to collect and get it engraved before the official presentation evening.
I'm happy to help make this happen for this years KO Cup final.
We (The Pawleyne) are the current holders, so I'd be happy to make sure that the Trophy is delivered back to the League in time for the night of this Summers Final, where the 08 Champions can collect upon winning.
It is a bit anti-climatical when you win the cup in October, but don't pick it up till January. And in that time, a team that has been dethroned keeps it on display. . . . .

was a good night and a good final with both players giving a good account of themselves.
would liked to have seen some seating for the players to make it a bit more 'tv' like and a bit of an intro for the players rather than people hanging around and muttering 'have they started yet?'
i said for donkeys years this should've happened so it's a step in the right direction... it's nearly even worth entering the singles for!!!

A great night but little, if any, respect was paid to Danny and Mark in the singles final. The more people that came in the louder it got. The same goes for the actual presentation. Nice to see Mark Halsey presenting again, but I lost count how many times he asked for quiet. The attitude seemed to be, I've got my trophy, sod the rest.
I also agree that the singles final should be a perminent fixture to the presentation night with a more 'TV feel' to it, with propper seating for the finalists. Hopefully the next one will be a bit more respected.
Well played to Danny and Mark, it was a great final to watch and congratulations to Danny after a shakey start that could have seen him 3-0 down. But got over his enitial nerves and a deserved winner in the end.:clap:

So should the players have their own theme tunes blaring out from the jukebox as they approach the table, as in the darts? If so what songs should they have?
Danny - anything by Pink.

I am not one for Waitcoats and bells and whistles, and all that but a bit of dresscode for the players wouldn't have gone a miss in my opinion. Perhaps people may not have known who Danny and Mark where, given the jean, t-shirt and trainer combo for Mark, and the shorts, flip flops and singlet for Danny. Could have quite easily been a skateboard competition rather than a singles final.
Slight exageration I know, but if you want to make it an occasion this is a joint responsibility of the spectators, the venue and the players.

its always going to be difficult to keep people silent in a pub atmosphere, even tho there was talking during the final i think most of us when playing on a tues will pretty much expect chat n misic going on while were playing in the background so if your focused enough it shouldnt bother you.

Not sure that playing it in silence would do anyone any favours
Sure there was noise / chat etc but i think both would rather that than complete silence - guess only theyu can answer
Really good night after a long day drinking/gambling the eden certainly had a good night & although we laid Danny 'Golden' Evans at 70/100 with Mr Nuttman (And would have taken more if anyone fancied it)
we were still cheering him on as i think this season has shown the quality of the fella & he deserves all that was said on the night :one:
But the highlight was Arthur 'Mangled not angles' Hewson dirty dancing
pure class
Then Pedro & him went onto Black sheep till 5am

I'm gonna be looking at upgrading our Presentation Dances to what they used to be many moons ago. I've not been at a do now for some 2-3 years but what i saw on saturday night its no wonder that people attend, collect their trophies then go. There used to be a time when teams had tables to themselves, would bring their partners would collect their awards and heap their tables up ... and stay for the duration. There must be something wrong for Mick O'Donnell not to attend a do. I'm not having a pop at Rileys, but I do honestly think that there is insufficient room and seating arrangements to accomodate our needs and requirements for the Presentation Dance to move forward. If people are happy for it to remain as it is then sobeit but what I'm looking at is someting along the line that we enjoyed for many years at Allders. We may have continued to enjoy many more years there had it not been for a monority spoiling it for the majority but you did not see the mass departure then after the awards ceremony had finished. Obviously a decent venue with a sit down bit of grub is gonna cost and so I'll do what I can to get some idea of the costs involved to report back to you lot at the AGM in September. I've aleady e-mailed The Hilton and I would welcome any venue ideas from you the members that I can contact.

Mark, I could not agree more with your above comments.
The nights at Allders / Crystals etc were an excellent night which many hundreds of people would attend and it made the evening worth while.
Over the past few years people (not all but most) turn up collect their trophies and leave.
Times change unfortunately but i hope the good old days regarding the presentation nights return.

What did people feel about the final being held on the night? I know the standard was far from brilliant but do you feel that it worked or is it better off being played prior?
I for one have never played in anything like it . . Having the best part of 100 people within 10ft of you watching your every move was the biggest buzz I've ever had from pool . . For fear of blowing my own trumpet I've won various things at various levels of the game but nothing came close to winning in front of all those people who I play with week in week out and I know that Mark Miller felt exactly the same regardless of the result . . With a few tweaks it can be a fitting climax to the season and bring provide a worthy setting for the league's flagship event . .
With regards to entrance music I think that could make it a bit gimmicky but something simple such as announcing the players could work . . Seating for the finalists could work but as long as it is within the confined environment like it was on Saturday as that's what made the atmosphere so intense . . Also, if anything it was worse when it was quiet than when there was noise . . I know I felt uncomfortable when it fell deadly silent and if anything if it's deadly quiet then when inevitable one of the 100 people does make a noise it will be worse than when there is a constant background noise . .
. . the only change I would make to the presentation would be to have it much sooner to the season's end than it is . . We've just reached the half way mark of the subsequent season, three days after the presentation for the last season! I don't know if there is a particular reason for the delay between season end and presentation but it does seem way too long . .
I was never fortunate to be playing when the Allders presentations were about that I hear such good stories about but in the 14 years I've been playing in this league I can remember only a couple of times where people have stuck about and treated it as an end of season event rather than getting their trophies and leaving . . Maybe times have moved on and this is how it's going to be . . That's not to say it isn't worth a try but to get somewhere lavish and the same thing happen will take us further back than we already are . .

I was disappointed at the lack of disables facilities:lol: (Tony cripples are me Nuttmeg) I enjoyed the final both players really wanted it and the first three frames was the best I have seen thriller play for a very long time but final nerves got to both players to a certain extent and the bloke who kept shouting out shusssh was putting both players off.
Mark I personally think the lack of turnout is because people forget the presentation night is on this could be cured by having the night a bit closer to the end of the season.

Perhaps if we went back to seven games, we could have the presentation as soon as the matches had finished. Obviously all the winners would be based at Suzys,so that wouldn't be a problem !!

I agree . . They have done this for quite some time in the Tolworth league and over there it's a waistcoated affair . .
. . the only reason I wore shorts and flipflops was because I was practicing in there the day before and it was sweltering, as again it was on the Saturday . . And I look premier in whatever I wear . . I almost wore the yellow belt for The Power but it didn't go with the t-shirt I had on . .

Just for the record, the singles final was supposed to be a fully seated affair with an official Referee, but unfortunately due to miscommunication with Rileys staff and Bob Todd being unavailable for most of the lead up due to family illness, nothing really got done.
I'm just glad that people can see how good a Singles final on Preentation Night can be, even if it wasn't organised as well as was hoped.
In fact, I found it absolutely disgraceful that at gone Midday on the Saturday afternoon, the only person who was there to get the hundreds of trophies set up was Peter Brooks. Danny and Ben from Rileys ended up hauling the 20+ boxes of trophies out of the office and started setting them up before Jason Cook arrived to help out a bit later.
There seem to be quite a few Committee Members who seem to think their jobs consist of sitting at a table twice a year for meetings. The job of sorting out everything for Presentation Night should be a necessity.
Rant over. I hope the Presentations can be the massively successful and elaborate night that I've heard so much about. Good luck Mark et al.
