Thread subject: CroydonPool.com - The CDPL Online Community :: Coney Cues Need Players urgently can you help?

Hi GUys,
Plain and simple fact of it is that the Coney are in crisis having lost 2 key players in the space of a month for various reasons. Now whilst we are struggling to continue to avoid another mid season drop out we have come to the tipping point where something HAS to happen. We currently have a squad of 7 players (6 for league cup) and because of work commitments are turning up with 5 and 6 each week at best.
Basically we have now set a time limit for signing two new players (who have at least an outside chance of winning some games) by Monday 18th February. If this does not happen we will fold as it is just becoming too hard to continue.
So if you know any half decent players who are willing to come to Elmers End please let myself or Mavis know by the above date at latest.
Hopefully you can see we are making the effort to not have another drop out but losing two of our best players permanently has taken the wind out of our sails.
cheers

cheers for that mate we need to sign 2 players who are going to win some games in div one though and know the rules I am not sure if I have seen anyone who isn't already signed fitting that criteria from the Elmer.

What we actually said was we knew when it was right to 'turn off the Eden lights'. Anyway, what has our now very comfortable situation have to do with your current mid season crisis?
I'll send out a couple players on 'loan' if it helps you!!

Anyway, piss off Alex :nerner:
Back on topic..
If anyone is interestd I can honestly say you will not find a better environment to play pool or a nicer bunch (apart from Rhys of course) to play with.
If anyone doubts the teams comittment still in the light of recent results, the team has been 3-2 up in the last two league games against the Patriots and the Prop. One frame was forfeited versus the Patriots for having 5 players and in both games the player nominated twice lost twice, to lose both 4-3. I think it is fair to say with 7 we would have probably won both. The heartbeat of the team is still beating strongly With a couple more players the future could be bright.

Ah bless James.
What I'll really miss is singing you all the ''Walking in an Eden Wonderland'' song, and I guess if I am never to see you again it will be a 'bitter sweet' memory of mine that I got to sing it one last time in YOUR pub.

Wouldn't it be wise to explain the Coney team selection process at this stage? Don't the really shit players have some gay one frame play off match each week to win a place in the team?

By all means.
I think you are referring to a few seasons ago when there was indeed a couple of play offs (3 or 4 max) for the last place when records and form were similar between players. Very fair in my eyes and completly contradicts your accusations that Berty only picks 'his mates'.
Anyway Alex, no biting from me. I am sure you will pick up many friend and allegiances long after we have gone.

My days of worrying about the absolute rubbish that comes out of the powers (grrr) mouth are well and truly over. If any other non losers can see that this is an attempt purely and simply to avoid you guys having another bye in the already depleated season then please get in touch if not then no one can say we didn't try. I mean after all to come on here and have to advertise for players amidst the oh so predictable taunts of the Eden will hopefully show you that this is serious.
Harry if we do fold I am sure there will be one or two players although I for one will be dismantling my cue for the last time in Croydon Pool.

And also do not apply if you will mind Matt Palmer picking his mates to play first. Only then if there is a space will you be saved from the humiliation of a three man one frame sudden death play off.
Playground banter at its best.

yer cheers for that Danny we are going to get merv up from Portland every week for that? No chance we either have a side that can compete or stuff it we could not account for the fact that we would lose two players from an already very small squad before the half way point. I said to the guys last night outright that I wanted to fold based on the fact that you would get absolutely no thanks for trying to continue with 4 or 5 each week till the end of the season. So I said we may aswell fold now and although I had a slight pang of guilt about leaving a bye in the fixtures that is rapidly evapourating.
Anyway as i said the above stands if we can sign players if not we fold simple.

I've done it for 9 years so I guess I don't appreciate your position.
Seriously, either of us are both mad to consider doing travelling for one frame of pool. I think why we do it is simple. From day one, we have pretty much kept the same teams - team of long term mates.

Come on Harry, I have nothing but admiration for the Coney. From rags to the riches of Division 1. Not much won along the way but they are in Div 1 on merit. They proved me wrong, as after two years they are still there.
Remember though the Coney are Beckenham's all time third best ever team, which remains their only accolade to date of note. In the good old days, they all used to queue up outside the Eden Park Hotel hoping to catch a glimpse of their boyhood Eden pool heroes. They worshipped the ground we stood on. I can see Berty now, chasing Scott down Eden Park High Street calling out to him for one more signed photo.
It would be a sad day for the league if they folded. I'd be bored senseless.

what is the rule on transfers during mid season.... there must be some sort of restrictions. In my old league up north there was a transfer fee of ?50 per player midseason which not only stop ppl from swapping left right and centre but made players actually think about what team they wanted to join rather than going for the best team they could get in, in case they didnt get a game etc.
Juts wondering if there's a limit in the cpdl to how many times u can swap during season.

Both secretaries have to agree on the transfer. The fee is the same as any other mid-season registration which is ?2.50 I believe.

Power, haven't you got any players you can give us again? Ansell worked out very nicely in the end.
None of my players like your team. Then again, neither did Ansell.
I'll do you a favour, god knows why I should bother after Berty's tantrum yesterday, but I know for a fact 3 ex-Wheatsheaf players are now regulars in the Elmer. Maybe have a word around the pub and you may get lucky.
Plus you may recall a player of ours from years back, Andy Stevenson. Don't think he has played league standard for few years but he can hold a cue, and he is a local fella and I can give you his mobile number if you want to buzz him.

Alex, not wishing to destroy this new found entente cordiale, however I saw Andy at the Langley whilst playing in a singles match. Had a quick chat with him. He is now running a darts team, and said he doesn't miss pool.
Don't want to sound like I am being obstructive, just want to prevent false hope. We need to keep all the teams we have....

cheers statto but as mavis said we will not be approaching teams to steal players rather them approaching us. we dont want to upset anyone or put other teams in the same situation as ourselves
cheers

Don't understand that one Berty.
The players in question are currently not attached to any pool team.

The first person I met was Merv... most hated man in all of Croydon. Alex, I appreciate you like a bit of stirring banter for some fun here and there but posting lies that are potentially hurtful to people that have no qualm with you is uncalled for on a public forum. Shortened: don't be a **** and lie about me in order to stir shit with my teamates

Surely if you have 5 or 6 players each week you can carry on, your only giving away 1 frame every couple of weeks and on your past few seasons form you should be able to cope with that and stay in Div 1? You must still have somne fight left in you guys, i see the only reason for you to quit would be that you are scared of possibly dropping into the relegation spots but thats part of the fun. Mid table boredom is no fun anyway.
The Eden dont want you to fold, it would be like australia saying "were not going to play the ashes this year as we know were going to lose". You cant always have 7 brilliant players, sometimes you have to consolidate your position rather than going for glory. The only way you will ever attract new players of a reasonable quality is to have some fight and prove to people that you can cope in these situations. Saying you are going or not going to fold every other day does not give anyone confidence that your team will be around much longer and so why would they want to join you?
We have really struggled for the last 3 years for players, we even had 3 of croydons big players all come and play for us in the same season and even that didnt really help us out much. We spent 2 seasons giving away 1 to 2 games a week fielding players that were probably not div 1 quality but we still survived albeit with a couple of close relegation calls.
The difference for us is that Alex has always managed to get us that 1 or 2 extra players to keep us ticking over but whilst still keeping the core of the team the same. And some of those players have come due to our somewhat outspoken nature and Eden ROAR, as they like a team with spirit.
So forget all this talk of folding and start thinking about next season and how your going to get enough players and help to enjoy your Tuesdays again. When your in the position your in its horrible and folding sounds like a nice way out but give it a couple of months and you will be wondering if it was the right decision, and then if you want to re-form you have to start in Div 6 all over again. Get 2-3 new players for next year, they dont have to be brilliant but reliable and maybe share out some of the admin work to allow you to enjoy it again and im sure you will be fine.
And if your not happy with some posts on this website then just dont reply to them, but i would say spending your working day on this message board is not a healthy place to be. Message boards always end up with these acrimonious conversations which dont do anyone any favours.

Fair point sting a pretty well constructed argument. We have signed a new player and have convinced internally to commit to the end of the season as we always said we did not want to walk out mid season. I will commit to the rest of the season and keep on travelling etc but with increasing work commitments (I dont spend every day on here !) I will finish at the end of this season. If the format changes to 5 next season Luke (who is running the team now) may decide to continue next season. In terms of our team spirit it is as good as ever that was never the problem I guess somethings can just reach their natural conclusion and without wanting to start afresh or merge teams this may be our natural conclusion. Nearly ten years is a long time for the same group of players to be in a team?!! You should know!

Berty... How long do you want this thread to run... "We have signed a new player"... Everyone knows your "Blood Brother" The Power is going to be on that like fly on shit... Why did you not just say we signed Steve Fields or who ever... So up yours Alex...??? End of conversation...

Come on Farley, lets face it - it's embarrassing for them. I'm embarrassed for them.
After all, what is there to 'big' up about publicly having to concede when dipping into the transfer market, the Coney end up signing what amounts to past or present Eden 'fringe' players...........:fish:

SOS (Save our season) at last is over :chicken:
At least now you can fulfil our fixture & we can hand you the beating we all know has been coming - bet you get a full team out for that fixture
Seriously though - good to see you are back on track chaps

When was the last time there was a transfer of any significance in this league?
There are two types of transfer/signing . . Those that are made in an attempt to win things and those that are made in an attempt to ensure survival . .

I just would like to take this opportunity to welcome Donna to the Coney fold. She has really helped us out by offering to play for us for the rest of the season which has made this exercise a complete success. The rest of us will pool in and ensure we now complete the current season which is good news for all
A big thanks again to Mark at Goodfellas for being such a great gut in proceedings.

There is no need to be 'weightist' just because you're on a starvation diet.
