Just to report to fellow league members that Rileys Lewisham closed this morning. This will affect home fixtures for the BloodMasters and the Rileys Snooker.

Peter Knight v Metin Tomris (moved to Frith Road)
Mark Eldridge v Rob Collings (match postponed)

BloodMasters v Rack Pack (new venue being looked into)

funny thing is
rielys frith road just announced they are taking sky sports out till at least september...to save money (famous last words of every industry taking the sports out in a sports venue)

(why would they not include the start of the football season with the revenue this creates )
as captain chaos from the cannonball run says.....da da daaaaaaa

I heard last night that the Hurrcaine Pool hall in Thorton Heath is up for sale also. A sad state of affairs at the moment.

There are plenty of large empty places in Croydon, which can accommodate a very large pool venue, but it all comes down to someone investing a large amount of cash, which will not come anytime soon.

yes teach if u say so,last frame played there did i not break n dish ? also won the rankings at that venue a couple ov years ago....stuff u may not understand....lets c how u boys get on without a 9ball table to play on

My worst fears have been realised. Frith Road Rileys are having Sky Sports taken out to release the space for the Lewisham tables to be re-sited. Apparently Health and Safety have insisted that they retain the viewing chairs to ensure that there is some space between the tables.

Fair point Jacko - pool just isn't an obsession of mine!!! Was just a little surprised at your sheer delight at Lewisham closing - could you share your reasons?

So what is the plan for tonight's game?

shame to see the place go..i know it was a bit of a trek for some of the teams from croydon & beyond but always thought it was a good venue to play at with good space and nice food. hopefully the cuemasters will find an alternative venue...nice to see jackos english is improving...beats reading his infant txt grammer...

I suggest play at frith for now and when we are supposed to be at home we can play at wherever their new venue is.

As for the place shutting down, I can't say I'll miss the trip but I did think they were the best tables in the league.

Skysports going from frith is a joke, along with most of the tables. Don't know if frames has skysports but it's gonna be a much better venue. Surrey have just moved down there and the place has been/is getting done up, new tables etc. Let's all get to frames, free car parking there too!

On a serious note,it is quite worrying to witness Rileys gradual demise. I remember that Sky Sports was removed from Purley Way as a "temporary measure". Of course it never returned. With Frith Road, it is baffling how they can have so many people in a venue and yet not be profitable. There must be reasons that surely can be addressed. If not,God only knows what the future holds for Croydon pool.

Its quite simple how they don't make money. Everyone wants a freebie. Taking the pool costs aside the amount of money they don't make on a football night is ridiculous.

Myself, Sean, Met and Tom were there watching the second half of the Euro final, and between us we had more drinks the the entire audience (around 30) watching the game.

A couple of weeks ago a couple of lads were watching the football, one was carrying his own bottle of water, and the other eating Burger King. Neither had any intention of buying a drink or contributing to the club. They then argued for 1o minutes with Dominika that they didn't have any obligation to do so.

I said this to the guys before on football evenings everyone should pay ?5 for a ticket and this can be redeemed in drinks or food. The messers can then go away and crawl back under a stone.

Oh noes, I came on here to read about Neil getting bashed up by Ray (hopefully) and I'm met with this awful news!

I agree with Shaggy, people don't contribute to the venues costs in any way and then they're the first to moan when it goes down the tubes.

The number of people who go in there on a tuesday and buy basically nothing is mad! i couldn't imagine going in there and not buying at least 3 or 4 drinks - alcoholilc ones or not. Bert, Eric, Shaggy and a few other usual suspects are basically financing the whole gaff.

RIP Rileys - Frith Road included.

?5 footie tickets redeemable through drinks are a good idea by the way

Rather than bad mouth RIleys (RIP rileys!) where we all work hard and strive to accomodate everybody, please pick up the phone and ask us as opposed to assuming points then you will get the truth.
With regards to Sky Sports the domestic football season has finished. The olympics and tennis are on terrestrial tv and cutting Sky Sports till the start of the football season will save the company in excess of ?3000 per unit, surely this is common business sense?
Yes we are a sports venue and Sky Sports WILL return for the charity shield which is the 1st game of the footie season.
With regard to Lewisham we are not accomodating there tables, god knows where this rumour came from.
With regards people thinking we are not profitable, have you got access to our accounts?
Finally please in future contact Simon, Martin or Aaron on 02086497788 rather than posting infactual comments.

Well said........ This place has be the best venue in the whole of croydon to watch the footie, great screen and great atmosphere and lets face it, it is the home of croydon pool and plays host to half the teams of the croydon pool leauge, and does it easily if ya ask me.....

just didnt like the trek over there teach,n the speed ov the table made the pockets like buckets so even average players could easily dish as there shots did not have to be pure...also on such forgiving tables some players played with great confidence knowing they cant miss when normally they might twitch...plus as a fudger its hard to to hang pockets...(just think it woz a tad 1 dimensional there)dish or be dished  n teach im not at all obsessed by pool far far far from it...

I have to admit your right Tony being as we played all our matches at home last summer we were always going to win the leauge, also I agree the reson myslef and Ricky not missing a ball all night and u dishing was blantly due to the table and nothing to do with being half decent for once we agree :)

so sincere...all im saying is in golf you have to drive a ball well, hit solid irons, chip bump and run shots around greens and finally putt..its a challenge to try and master all aspects of the game...in pool you first thing you learn is how to pot, then next is to get position, then doubles, trick shots, snooker escapes, tactical play, touch play, finesse and so forth.all of these things make pool like a lesser version of golf but a challenge..smacking balls in ona 9ball table is not a challenge as potting is the very first thing we all learnt, yes it is fun but it clearly suits players who may not have evolved other parts of there game as well...not a dig at any1 at all just an observation...

I thought pool was a potters game, u dont see the pros fudging up. fudging is for people who cant pot. Anyway,y all the whinging and whining Gaylord, its the same for everyone.

clearly no whinging or whining rick, dont no where u got that...only ever said it woza 9ball table n O wata shame that venue as closed...point woz really if u dish ona normal table ul av to graft for it a lot more than that easy bucket pocket table...n make no mistake pro's ava all round game otherwise they would not b pro's  n as for that old china its the same for every1 different tables suit different players n thatsa fact same as different golf courses play to different players strengths...

Pat - I just saw your post about sky not being reconnected. That is pretty funny as Rileys were so proud about being a sports bar and garunteeing sky for the new season.....it's a slippery slope!

Yeah I saw that too Ben, it's a real shame.

No Sky and no air con are pretty fundamental, but choosing between a toilet seat and a lock on the toilet door for the last year is starting to do my head in. How much would those cost to replace?

It's so infuriating to see one member of staff rota'd in on their own during an England game at 8pm on a Tuesday with about 6 teams playing out of the venue.

So what was the question again? Oh yeah, I don't think we need access to your accounts.

Sad thing is I've been an advocate of Rileys for years but the unbearable heat is starting to turn me against you. Even when it's 18 degrees outside it's about 40 up there.

Marty I agree buddy same old same old I'm afraid with Riley's If it's not broke don't fix it, if it is broke make it worse somewhere along them lines.

Riley's Purley never had decent locks on there toilets even the bog roll needed mending lol, even that was a tissue or is that an issue.

It's all down to money and budgets but I won't go into that, I'm only there to have a good game and meet some of my fellow pool buddy's.

;) COOLIO!!

it is what it is but it's silly for them to come on the website and defend themselves and make out they are something that they're not. But then again i have no doubt the staff member that posted that on the website had been told by management that sky would be back for the season.

Sky has been re-connected, reason for the delay was that negotations between head office and sky took longer than anticipated.

I'm sure the majority of croydonpool forum users would agree that advertising a football match would mean that the televisions are defo in full working order.
We even have new batteries in the remotes so we can change channel if we need too.
