I've been watching the IPA World Championships on YouTube over the past week where they have been raving about this cloth.

Just wondering if anyone has played on it or knows a venue that has it as I'm curious to know what it's like?

from what i know it's the speed cloth you get on an american pool table, with no nap, and plays very much like the shaved cloth they have on a pro snooker table
i think they have them on tables in morray's new club in redhill

not sure i'd be raving on about them tho... for me there's no grip and everything slides so you can't do half the shots you'd want to unlike you can with a heavier snooker ball!

it's more consistent and harder wearing so will no doubt catch on.

Do you think a combination of pro cup balls and this cloth should be a winner?

pro cup balls aren't heavier then the old style balls. but they do feel that way when you play with them because of the resin they're made with.

i'm not a fan of them as there's lots of shots you can't do that you could with the old balls (one of the reasons i took a break from county) but lots of people like them.
they do run better and are more consistent. but you do get more kicks
lots of people prefer them and in my opinion it's because they pot easier so their all kidding themselves!

so whilst the combination isn't a winner for me, i do think it will take off

Pool seems to be very much aimed at levelling the playing field these days ,very 1 dimensional..my strong points were always knowing my angels so could get out of any snooker, good touch play, good pressure potting and finesse side ...all the advanced skills demolished by world rules and pro cuts ...now any chump think there the greatest Angry

Maybe. Although I'm not sure what the skill was in me rolling up behind the ball I failed to get proper position on in the old EPA rules . . . winkgrin

Your comment is along the 1 dimensional ,it's not all about just potting and position, how often do you see anyone first visit dish over 50% ? so when you think of Croydon's best disher's none of them hit over 50% first visit dish rate,so hench you must have an all round game,at our highest level in the past the only thing really separating anyone was who can out think the other, who has the most bottle and will to win ,knowing how to manipulate an opponent i.e. give them some rope and let them hang themselves but now it's people just potting without pressure because they know if they miss there still in the game...Potting is the first thing you learn then as you progress you learn more advanced stuff but as already stated world rules and pro cuts have removed the more advanced stuff...butter wouldn't melt ...

the old rules were too negative... run out of position and you can just roll up behind your ball... so in them days the player with the most patience would win
so they had to change...
the DF takes some getting your head round but now that has made the game more tactical when it does go tactical, it's just a different tactic to before

as for the pro cup balls, they do change what shots you can and can't do and for me they take a lot of shots out of your locker, for example a rescue positional shot, as they slide and lose check, side and spin on the white

they do run truer but you get more kicks
they pot easier which is why people like them

The change to pro cup balls wouldn't have bothered me at all 10 -15 years ago, nor would a change of cloth or rules.

Rules and cloth changes still wouldn't bother me, but will I am happy to accept that the pro cup balls may well have better qualities, I cant play the same shots as I can with the old balls.

And as an old dog, I can't be bothered to learn new tricks. It was a definitely consideration to be knocking County on the head.

played blackball at the weekend....

much better game to play and follow then world rules...

you lay a good snooker (or find yourself in one) and you have to try and get out of it rather then tapping the white where it is...
something i've really missed in pool

plus i like the 2 shots don't carry as it cuts out the negativity of lesser players waiting for 2 shots...
means you have to grow a pair...

regarding cloth, simonis have now bought strachan... by all accounts it wasn't popular at that IPA tour however i think costs will determine what cloth we all end up with!

I loved blackball when I used to play it.

Interesting that the cloth wasn't popular. The commentators must have been told to really push it!

blackball if thats bapto rules there by far the best ,mixing brains and bottle, pretty much always waste your first visit developing dead balls before you dish if you have 2shots...what makes a great player is brains and bottle when the pressure is on,strangely enough turning down a dish can take more bottle then going for 1,playing percentage pool and having an arse will separate you from the rest...butter wouldn't melt ...

If there is a difference between BAPTO and Blackball rules it is pretty subtle.

Both have the same requirement for a legal break. The breaker nominates their colour after the break. Skill shot applies. 2 shots rather than 2 visits.

Interesting that the announcement says

blah blah blah . . . From a player’s perspective, the cloth is more responsive which means a wider range of shots can be played compared to a napped cloth. . . blah blah blah

I wonder which players they asked and more importantly who proof reads their announcements. Unless they did only ask one player!

a little dickie bird told me they all (including a former world junior champion) loved it... scary at first but great once you get used to it

it will make tables/clubs more consistent imo
